Springboks and Emirates Lions captain, Warren Whiteley will miss his franchise’s Vodacom Super Rugby match – the first after the Internationals break – against Japan’s Sunwolves at the Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg due to a groin injury.

This is the same injury that kept him out of the third and final test of the Castle Lager Incoming Series between South Africa and France at his homeground last Saturday (24 June), which resulted in DHL Stormers lock Eben Etzebeth taking over the captaincy.

Whiteley’s absence means that loose-forward, Jaco Kriel will likely lead the Lions on Saturday, while coach Johan Ackermann’s son, Ruan, plays at the vacant no.8 position.

The Lions visit the Cell C Sharks in their last match of the regular season on the 15th of July after this weekend’s match, after which the knockout stages will begin, where the Lions will have a home quarter-final against an opposition that is yet to be determined.
